BROWN, HENRY ANGUS (1873-1943)

BROWN, HENRY ANGUS, Baptist minister, Newcastle field, 1907-09; b. Sunderland, England, 14 Nov 1873, s/o Thomas Brown and Mary J. Young; m. 1900, Mae E. Gunn, of Boston; d. Parrsboro, N.S., 18 Jul 1943.

After spending several years in India, Henry A. Brown went to the United States to finish his theological studies, and while he was there he married a Boston native. Ordained in 1901, he was the Baptist minister at Elgin, N.B., until called to Newcastle in 1907 to be pastor of the town church and the small church at Lower Derby. He stayed for two years, during which time his wife, who was a graduate of Gordon Bible College and a talented soloist, was a favorite in social and musical circles.

When he resigned at the end of May 1909, Brown also left the Baptist ministry and joined the Methodists. His first posting with that denomination was at O'Leary, P.E.I. Prior to church union in 1925 he had assignments to no fewer than six Methodist circuits on the Island, and after union he had at least eight United Church pastorates in the three Maritime provinces. One of the lengthiest of these was his last, at Sandy Cove and Centreville on Digby Neck, in Nova Scotia, where he was stationed for approximately three years. He enjoyed only a brief retirement at Port Greville and Parrsboro, N.S., prior to his death in 1943, at age sixty-nine. He was survived by his wife, Mae E. Gunn, two sons, and a daughter.
