CAMPBELL, DUGALD (1758-1810)

CAMPBELL, DUGALD, non-resident land surveyor; b. Scotland, c1758; nephew of Patrick Campbell; m. Jacobina Drummond; d. Fredericton, 12 Apr 1810.

Dugald Campbell was an army officer who worked for many years as a land surveyor for the New Brunswick government. In 1804 he completed a survey of the Little Southwest Indian reserve for Micmac Chief Francis Julian and his tribe. This was intended to make good on promises of land grants given to the Indians many years earlier and to put a stop to encroachment on Micmac holdings in the Red Bank area.

Campbell ran a number of other survey lines on the Miramichi at the time, with the objective of defining the different reserves. While his surveys did not end the land disputes, they left the Indians in a better position to defend their territory, especially when waves of land-seeking immigrants began to arrive from Great Britain in the wake of the Napoleonic wars.
