CARMAN, HENRY CHARLES DARLING (1812-1859)

CARMAN, HENRY CHARLES DARLING, merchant, JP, and consular agent; b. 14 Jan 1812, s/o William Carman Sr and Ann Sharman; brother of William Carman and Richard Carman; m. 1835, Jemima Dean, d/o Joseph Dean, comptroller of customs at Miramichi; d. Halifax, 9 Aug 1859.

In 1829 Henry C. D. Carman was working as a clerk in Christopher Clarke's store in Chatham. From about 1832 he had his own store on Water Street, in which George Burchill was hired as a clerk at age fourteen. In 1835 he was advertising his services as an auctioneer and commission agent. He was named a justice of the peace in 1838 and United States consular agent for the port in 1839. He was a political supporter of John T. Williston during the election troubles of the 1840s and was judged to be somewhat naive in his views.

Carman went bankrupt in 1848 and moved soon afterwards to Halifax, where he was a commission merchant. He was forty-seven years old when he died there in 1859. His widow, Jemima Dean, died at Horton, N.S., in 1879.
