CARPENTER, WILFRED EMERSON (1868-1953)

CARPENTER, WILFRED EMERSON, Baptist minister, Boiestown field, 1937-44; b. Dundas, Westmorland Co., N.B., 14 Jan 1868, s/o the Daniel Shaw Carpenter and Elizabeth Ann Bleakney; m. 1893, Flora N. Sears, of Midgic, near Sackville, N.B.; d. Moncton, 14 Jan 1953.

Wilfred E. Carpenter came from a family of Baptist ministers. His father, the Rev. Daniel S. Carpenter, had a brother Isaiah Carpenter who was a minister, and his maternal grandfather, the Rev. James Bleakney, had three sons, James, Joseph, and W. A. Judson Bleakney, who were ministers.

Carpenter was educated at the universities of Mount Allison and Acadia and was ordained in 1902. He ministered widely throughout the Maritime Provinces, having a total of sixteen pastorates. One of the lengthiest of these was his seven-year term at Boiestown, between 1937 and 1944. He was seventy-six years old at the end of the term, and he retired soon afterwards at Surrey in Albert County, N.B. His death, which occurred in hospital in Moncton in 1953, was as a result of his being struck by a car while walking on the highway near his home. He was survived by six daughters and three sons, his wife having died in 1949.
