CONNOLLY, EUGENE D. (1875-1935)

CONNOLLY, EUGENE D., teacher, business manager, publisher and editor; b. Douglastown, 16 Jul 1875, s/o Daniel Connolly and Margaret Gallagher; m. 1912, Mary Catherine Barry, d/o James Barry and Julia Dennis, of Point Pleasant, Northwest Bridge; d. Newcastle, 8 Mar 1935.

After attending local schools, Eugene Connolly was admitted to the Provincial Normal School in 1893 as a candidate for a 1st class teacher's license. He graduated in 1894 and later taught at Chatham Head, Memramcook, and Barnaby River. He left the profession in 1899 and enrolled at the St John Business College, where he finished the program of instruction in less than three months, breaking the record for time required to reach the various performance standards. Afterwards, he worked for a lumber company at Nouvelle, Que., and for the Lynch firm at Chatham Head. He was bookkeeper and clerk for John McKane while McKane owned the Sinclair lumber business, and he became manager in 1909 of the reorganized Edward Sinclair Lumber Co.

Connolly, who was a "great reader and conversationalist," bought the weekly Union Advocate of Newcastle in 1928. From that date until his death in 1935, he was its publisher and editor, but he was ill much of the time and never realized his ambitions in the field of journalism and publishing. The paper was subsequently edited by J. E. P. ("Ned") Butler, until it was sold in 1939.

Connolly served a term as president of the County Conservative Association and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife, Mary C. Barry, had two daughters. Their home was at Derby Junction, where Mrs Connolly later kept the post office for many years.
