CONNORS, WILLIAM JOSEPH (1859-1958)

CONNORS, WILLIAM JOSEPH, general merchant; b. Douglasfield, 15 Jan 1859 (bap. 6 Feb 1859), s/o Patrick Connors, a native of New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland, and Theresa Kane; brother of Jane Connors; m. 1897, Emma C. White, d/o James White and Katherine Foran, of Newcastle; d. Bartibog, 22 Dec 1958.

William J. Connors was educated at St Michael's male academy and its successor, St Michael's Commercial College, which was operated by the Christian Brothers. After he left school he worked for a while in Roger Flanagan's store and then migrated to Wisconsin. He returned a few years later and opened his own small store in Chatham, which he conducted until he was past eighty.

Connors boasted in 1958 that he had not missed a meeting of the County Almshouse Commission since his appointment as a member in 1891. He lost track of his age and celebrated his 100th birthday a year early but was within a month of 100 when his death occurred. At that time he was making his home with his son, Father Everett J. Connors, who was the parish priest at Bartibog for many years. He was predeceased by his wife, Emma C. White, and their only daughter.
