CREAGHAN, DONALD SUTHERLAND (1888-1968)

CREAGHAN, DONALD SUTHERLAND, businessman and consular agent; mayor of Newcastle, 1923-25 and 1939-41; b. Newcastle, 27 Sep 1888, s/o John Daniel Creaghan and Ellen Gertrude Adams; brother of John Adams Creaghan; m. 1919, Rita Buckley, d/o David Joseph Buckley and Mary E. Wellwood; d. Newcastle, 9 Jun 1968.

Donald S. Creaghan was educated at Harkins Academy, Loyola College, and the Saint John Business College. He joined the J. D. Creaghan Co. about 1905 and was manager of the Newcastle store from an early date until his retirement in 1967. At the same time, he acted as vice-president, president (1938-58), and chairman of the board of directors of the company.

For more than thirty years Creaghan was the Norwegian and Swedish vice-consul on the Miramichi. He was exceptionally active in civic affairs, serving several terms as a Newcastle town councillor and for a total of four years as mayor. He also sat on both the County Council and the Newcastle School Board for many years. In the late 1940s and early 50s he was a governor of St Thomas College. He was active in Conservative party politics and was elected to a term as president of the County Conservative Association. He belonged to numerous charitable, patriotic, and recreational organizations, as well as the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife, Rita Buckley, had five sons and a daughter. One of their sons was the Newcastle physician Dr Mark Creaghan.
