DESMOND, DANIEL J. (1880-1960)

DESMOND, DANIEL J., bridge inspector; mayor of Chatham, 1937; b. Chatham 27 Jul 1880, s/o Patrick Desmond and Susan Sheridan; m. 1916, Catherine O'Brien, of Rogersville; d. Chatham, 29 Jan 1960.

Daniel J. Desmond worked at shipbuilding as a young man and supervised the construction of the J. O'B for High Sheriff John O'Brien in 1910. By 1913 he was provincial inspector of bridges in Northumberland County, and he remained a bridge inspector for the rest of his working life.

After serving as a town councillor Desmond was elected mayor of Chatham in 1937, but he resigned before the expiration of his term. At the same time, he was a member of the Chatham School Board, of which he served as chairman from 1946 to 1955. No children were named as survivors of him or his wife, Catherine O'Brien, who died in 1957.
