DESMOND, PATRICK (1837-1903)

DESMOND, PATRICK, ship carpenter and master builder; b. 1837, s/o Patrick Desmond Sr and Joanna Mahoney; brother of James Desmond; m. 1864, Susan Sheridan, d/o John Sheridan and Ann Duffy, all natives of Ireland; d. Chatham, 11 Mar 1903.

Patrick Desmond's place of birth is usually given as Ireland, but he was baptized on the Miramichi on 13 August 1837, at six weeks of age. Like his older brother James Desmond he worked as a ship carpenter in the days of sail. He later became a master builder of steam-powered vessels. His best known jobs were as foreman for the construction of the ferry Miramichi at the Miramichi Foundry yard in 1884-85, and as supervisor of the building of the 400-passenger Alexandra, "a staunch, substantial, seaworthy, and convenient boat," at the same yard in 1901-02. In 1897 he oversaw the construction of the pilot steamer Senator Snowball, and in 1898 he designed and built a 'coasting schooner' for the W. S. Loggie Co. At the time of his death he was constructing a steamer for Anthony R. Adams.

Desmond and his wife, Susan Sheridan, raised a large family in Chatham which included Daniel J. Desmond.
