FOWLIE, JOHN A. (1869-1960)

FOWLIE, JOHN A., municipal officer; b. Little Branch, 2 Mar 1869, s/o Samuel Fowlie and Sarah Ward; m. 1898, Jennie L. Robertson, of Loch Lomond, St John Co., N.B.; d. Chatham, 4 Mar 1960.

John A. Fowlie was educated at the Chatham Grammar School and the Fredericton Business College and received an accountancy diploma in 1895. For a great many years prior to his resignation in 1932 he was the town clerk and treasurer of Chatham. He was also engaged in teaching, bookkeeping, and office work of different kinds during and following his municipal employment. In 1948, when he was nearly eighty years old, he was the auditor for the County Board of Health and the Chatham School Board.

In 1921 Fowlie was elected president of the New Brunswick Municipal Officers' Association. In his private time in the 1940s he researched and compiled a history and genealogy of the Fowlie family of the Miramichi. This was not published, but copies of the manuscript are held privately at Chatham and Black River. When he died in 1960, at age ninety-one, he was survived by a son.
