GAUTHIER, MARIE-JULIE-HENRIETTE (1834-1907)

GAUTHIER, MARIE-JULIE-HENRIETTE, Sister St-Cyrille of the Congregation of Notre Dame; teacher, and superior at Newcastle, 1870-76; b. Quebec City, 4 Dec 1834, d/o Augustin Gauthier and Marie-Josephte Tessier; entered religious life, 1854; d. Montreal, 26 Apr 1907.

Marie-Julie-Henriette Gauthier carried out more than a dozen assignments for the Congregation of Notre Dame as a teacher and administrator and was a founder of several of the communities in which she worked. Most of her career was spent in Quebec, but she served a term at the convent at Arichat, N.S., as well as a six-year term at St Mary's Convent in Newcastle, beginning in 1870. She retired to the mother house in Montreal in 1900 due to illness and died there seven years later, at age seventy-two.
