JARVIS, ROBERT ALEXANDER NEWTON (1891-1924)

JARVIS, ROBERT ALEXANDER NEWTON, newspaperman and consular agent; b. Houlton, Me, 2 Feb 1891, s/o Newton Jarvis and Margaret Rebecca Craig, of Devon, N.B.; m. 1912, Annie Blackmore Copp, d/o John Copp and Caroline A. Williston, of Newcastle; d. there, 6 Aug 1924.

Robert A. N. Jarvis grew up at Devon, N.B., and was educated in Fredericton schools. Around 1910 he settled in Newcastle, where he worked on the mechanical staff of the Union Advocate and served for several months in 1911 as editor. Later he joined the staff of the Wiarton, Ont., Echo but soon returned to Newcastle. While acting as a correspondent for the Telegraph Journal and other daily newspapers, he maintained links with the Advocate, of which he was described as manager in 1917 and editor again in 1919.

Around 1919 Jarvis was appointed acting United States consular agent at Newcastle, in the absence of Byron N. Call, and he was later named officially to the post. In 1922 he was made a commissioner for the Miramichi pilotage district. He was an adherent of the Methodist church and a member of the Masonic order. When he died in 1924, at age thirty-three, he was survived by his wife, Annie B. Copp, two daughters, and a son.
