BARRATT, GEORGE M. (1811-1878)

BARRATT, GEORGE M., Methodist minister, Miramichi circuit, 1859-62; b. Shropshire, England, 1811; m. 1841, Eliza Whiteside, of Saint John; d. there, 14 Aug 1878.

Reared in the Church of England, George M. Barratt was converted to Methodism and ordained before he left England in 1837 for the North American mission field. He arrived in Saint John and had his first assignment there. Over the next thirty-five years he worked in all three Maritime provinces. He came to the Miramichi in 1859 from Bedeque, P.E.I. When the census of 1861 was taken he was residing in Chatham with his wife, Eliza Whiteside, and two teenaged children. A year later he left to take over the Moncton Methodist circuit. He subsequently served in Nova Scotia. He retired in Saint John in 1873 and died there five years afterwards, survived by his wife and several children. To quote the Union Advocate, he was "much esteemed in Miramichi," as was his widow, for her "motherly kindness to the young and gentle admonitions to the erring."
