LOCKE, FREDERICK EDWARD (1888-1970)

LOCKE, FREDERICK EDWARD, businessman and churchman; mayor of Newcastle, 1945-47; b. Middleton, N.S., 1888, s/o the Rev. Edward Ellis Locke and Mary Jane Bagnell; m. 1st, 1914, Lucy Drewe Lingley, d/o Robertson Lingley and Catherine Morrison, of Newcastle, and 2nd, Grace Durkee, of Yarmouth, N.S.; d. Newcastle, 19 Sep 1970.

After acquiring a business college education Frederick E. Locke joined the Lounsbury Co. in Newcastle in 1907 and remained to make his career with the firm. From an early date he was secretary of the company and one of its directors. In 1926 he was made manager of both the motor and retail branches at Newcastle. For fifty years he was among the leading Lounsbury Co. executives.

In 1923 Locke was elected treasurer of the Miramichi Hospital Board. He also occupied leadership positions at the local level with the Children's Aid Society, the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Red Cross Society, and other charitable organizations. He was chairman of the Community Concert Association and a charter member and president of the Newcastle Rotary Club. He was a sports enthusiast who was active for many years in curling, badminton, tennis, and golf. He was a town councillor and mayor of Newcastle for two years. He was one of the most prominent laymen in the Baptist church in the Maritimes and a member of the board of governors of Acadia University. He was survived in 1970 by his second wife, Grace Durkee, a daughter, and a son.
