MALONEY, JOHN WILLIAM (1883-1954)

MALONEY, JOHN WILLIAM, lumberman and MP; mayor of Newcastle, 1935-36; b. Nelson, 22 Aug 1883 (bap. 25 Aug 1883), s/o John Maloney and Margaret Dunn; m. 1919, Maria Juanita De Olloqui, MD (q.v.); d. Newcastle, 3 Jun 1954.

After studying at St Joseph's College in Memramcook, J. William Maloney entered the lumber business on the Miramichi. In 1919 he had a sawmill at Nelson. He was president of the Barnaby River Boom Co. and also served a term as president of the New Brunswick Lumbermen's Protective Association. He was a town councillor in Newcastle from 1930 to 1933 and mayor in 1935-36. In 1940 he was unsuccessful in the election for the Northumberland County seat in the House of Commons, but he won it for the Liberal party in 1945 and held it until 1949. He did not seek renomination.

Maloney and his wife, Dr M. Juanita De Olloqui, had no children. A sister, Dr Alberta Maloney, who graduated from the Toronto College of Dental Surgery in 1923, was said to have been the first New Brunswick woman to qualify as a dentist.
