MARSHALL, ALEXANDER MACNAUGHTON (1804-1889)

MARSHALL, ALEXANDER MACNAUGHTON, livery stable and boarding house operator; b. Green Hill, Pictou Co., N.S., 12 Oct 1804, s/o Andrew Marshall and Catherine MacNaughton; m. 1827, Elizabeth Crockett, a native of Middle River, Pictou Co.; d. Chatham, 29 Nov 1889.

A grandson of 'Deacon' Robert Marshall, who settled in Pictou County in 1783, Alexander MacN. Marshall moved to Chatham with his wife and family in 1835. He was a shoemaker by trade but was operating a livery stable in 1851 and advertising his availability to transport travellers anywhere in the province. By 1854 he was also conducting a boarding house. A pictorial advertisement from 1870 shows Marshall House as a large colonial-style dwelling, which is open to both "permanent and transient boarders." Among the residents, for different periods, were the druggist J. D. B. Fraser Mackenzie, the dentist George J. Sproul, and the school principal G. Hugh Harrison. Other guests included bank employees, seamen, and official and private visitors to the Miramichi.

Marshall and his wife, Elizabeth Crockett, raised at least six children. Their daughter Elizabeth Marshall became the first wife of William Wyse, while their daughters Jane and Sarah A. Marshall succeeded to the family business. Their son Robert Marshall was a prominent Saint John insurance broker and Presbyterian churchman who was grand master of the Masonic fraternity of New Brunswick and occupied a seat for a time in the provincial House of Assembly.
