When William John Miller died in 1898 a small grocery business which he owned in Newcastle was taken over by his sons Stanley W. Miller and Harry S. Miller belonged to the Masonic order and was worshipful master of Northumberland Lodge in 1903/04. When he died in 1917, at age forty, his survivors were his wife, Jennie Bell, a daughter, and a son.
