MORRISSY, RICHARD HERBERT (1895-1968)

MORRISSY, RICHARD HERBERT, doctor; b. Seattle, Wash., 25 May 1895, s/o Edward Aloysius Morrissy and Sarah Campbell; m. 1938, Mary Isabel (Calder) Duffy, RN, d/o David Calder and Ada MacLean, and wid/o John E. Duffy; d. Newcastle, 18 Dec 1968.

R. Herbert Morrissy's father, a brother of John V. Morrissy, was a railroad contractor on the West Coast. He and his wife, Sarah Campbell, a native of New Westminster, B.C., were separated in the late 1890s, and from the age of three, R. Herbert Morrissy, the youngest of their three sons, lived with his aunt Jane (Morrissy) Quinn in Newcastle.

An excellent student and athlete, Morrissy was educated at Harkins Academy, St Thomas College, and St Francis Xavier University (BA 1916). In World War I he saw overseas service as a sergeant with the St Francis Hospital Unit. He was later trained in medicine at McGill University (MD CM 1924) and the University of Michigan, where he specialized in pediatrics.

Morrissy began a general medical practice in Newcastle in 1926. In 1932 he was designated as physician to the Micmac Indians of Eel Ground. He maintained his practice for forty-two years, until his death in 1968. He was survived by his wife, Mary I. (Calder) Duffy, two daughters, and two sons. His son Paul Morrissy became a member of faculty of St Thomas University in the field of anthropology.
