MCCURDY, JAMES FARQUHAR (1867-1939)

MCCURDY, JAMES FARQUHAR, Presbyterian minister, Red Bank and Whitneyville, 1912-19, and United Church minister, Black River and Napan, 1926-28; b. Halifax, 22 Nov 1867, s/o Matthew James McCurdy and Jean Russell; m. 1st, 1898, Amelia Jarvis Palmer, of Prince Edward Island, and 2nd, 1908, her sister, Ida Annie Palmer; d. Toronto, 2 Apr 1939.

James F. McCurdy, grandnephew of the Rev. John McCurdy, was educated at Dalhousie University (BA 1891) and trained for the ministry at the Presbyterian College in Halifax. He was ordained in 1894 and held pastorates at Tryon, P.E.I., New Richmond, Que., and Canard, N.S., before he was called to the Red Bank and Whitneyville charge in 1912. In December 1913 he and his family moved into the new manse which had been erected that year by the contractor Peter A. Forsyth. He remained in the charge for six years and then went to New Carlisle, Que. He was based there until called to Black River in 1926. Two years later he resigned and moved to Ontario. He retired in Ottawa in 1937. Six months before his death, he settled at Braeside, Ont., where he formerly had a church.

McCurdy's wives, both of whom predeceased him, were descended from James Bardin Palmer, a prominent Prince Edward Island politician, and they had a number of accomplished Palmer relatives. There were also several talented McCurdy children, including a son, W. Jarvis McCurdy, who was a graduate of Harvard University, and member of faculty at the University of Toronto at the time of his father's death.
