O'KEEFFE, ELIZABETH (1869-1929)

O'KEEFFE, ELIZABETH, Sister O'Keeffe of the Religious Hospitallers of St Joseph; teacher, and superior at Chatham, 1927-29; b. Bartibog, 3 Oct 1869, d/o William O'Keeffe and Elizabeth Delaney; sister of Michael Alexis O'Keeffe; entered religious life, 1886; d. Chatham, 13 Mar 1929.

Elizabeth O'Keeffe entered the Religious Hospitallers of St Joseph at Chatham in 1886, before her seventeenth birthday. In January 1888, when she joined the teaching staff of St Michael's Academy, she held a 2nd class license. By 1903 she was acting as principal of the school. Her retirement from the educational field was announced in 1915, and she later served as mistress of novices.

In 1927 O'Keeffe became superior of the religious community at Chatham, as successor to Mary Ann Connors (Sister Kane). When she died two years later the New Freeman referred to her as an outstanding member of her religious order.
