PENNA, HENRY (1856-1939)

PENNA, HENRY, Methodist minister, Boiestown circuit, 1883-86; and Derby circuit, 1892-96; b. Newlyn East, Cornwall, England, 12 Jun 1856, s/o William Penna and Mary Ann Jeffrey Burley; m. 1st, 1880, Jessie C. McDonald, and 2nd, 1891, Mrs Julia Sophia McCann, a native of Oak Bay, Charlotte Co., N.B.; d. Saint John, 3 Dec 1939.

The son of a miner, Henry Penna was educated in Truro, England, and was licensed as a local Methodist preacher before he left for Canada in 1876. Received on trial into the regular ministry soon after his arrival, he spent one of his probationary years at Tabusintac and was married there in July 1880. He was also ordained at that time and left the Miramichi to take over the circuit at Upper Kent, N.B.

Penna returned to the Miramichi in 1883, as successor to the Rev. Charles W. Hamilton at Boiestown. He stayed three years, served at two different locations in Charlotte County between 1886 and 1892, and was then appointed to the Derby mission. During his term, on 19 November 1893, a new church was dedicated at Millerton. When he departed in 1896 he went to Montague, P.E.I. He came back to New Brunswick in 1900 and retired in Saint John in 1920. He was survived in 1939 by two daughters. An older brother, William Penna, was also a Methodist minister in the Maritimes.
