PERLEY, ISRAEL (1738-1813)

PERLEY, ISRAEL, non-resident land surveyor; b. Boxford, Mass., 21 Jul 1738, s/o Thomas Perley and Eunice Putnam; m. Elizabeth Mooers; d. Maugerville, 30 Aug 1813.

Israel Perley was the deputy provincial land surveyor who laid off the lots which William Davidson was granted in 1786 after his 100,000-acre township grant was escheated. These lots were situated along both main branches of the Miramichi west of Wilson's Point and were occupied by some of the earliest settlers. Originally, most of the occupants were tenants of Davidson, but after his death in 1790 many of them bought their holdings. Perley returned in 1789 to establish the boundaries of the Eel Ground Indian reserve. A later survey which he carried out on the Miramichi was of the block of lots on the Southwest branch which came to be known as Betts Settlement. In 1801 he reported that there were forty-seven applicants for the forty-nine lots which he had surveyed at that location, most of whom were already occupying them.
