SHEWEN, MANSEL MURRAY CREWE (1876-1951)

SHEWEN, MANSEL MURRAY CREWE, Anglican missionary, Ludlow, Blissfield, and Blackville, 1903-04; b. Sydney, N.S., 30 Sep 1876, s/o Edward T. P. Shewen and Helen L. Crause; m. 1906, Edith Olive Bishop, of Montreal; d. Saint John, 2 Oct 1951.

The son of a civil engineer who was employed by the Canadian government, Mansel M. C. Shewen first came to the Miramichi in 1902 as a student assistant to the Rev. Henry Montgomery in the Ludlow and Blissfield mission. After taking a degree at Bishop's College (BA 1903) he returned to assume Montgomery's pastoral duties in Ludlow and Blissfield parishes, as well as those which the Rev. C. O'Dell Baylee had been carrying at Blackville. He made no entries in the St Peter's Church register during his term, but he ministered to members of the Derby congregation as well. He signed as "curate in charge" until after his ordination in December 1903 and then as "priest in charge." His residence was at Doaktown.

Shewen left in the fall of 1904 and was succeeded by Walter P. Dunham. He was later incumbent of the parishes of Greenwich and Kingston in Kings County. In 1915 he was appointed rector of Sussex, in which position he remained until his retirement in 1949. He was survived in 1951 by his wife, E. Olive Bishop. Their only daughter predeceased him.
