SIROIS, EMILIE (1836-1889)

SIROIS, EMILIE, Sister Sirois of the Religious Hospitallers of St Joseph, and superior at Chatham, 1879-85; b. Kamouraska, Lower Canada, 4 Jan 1836, d/o François Sirois and Emélie Beaulieu; entered religious life, 1858; d. Chatham, 24 Feb 1889.

Emilie Sirois was sent to Chatham in 1872. The next year, a novitiate was begun, and she was appointed mistress of novices. In 1879 she was named to succeed Mother Cesarine Raymond as superior. Throughout her term of leadership she was "the dominating spirit in the religious and apostolic life in the Chatham community," which she guided with a firm hand. She was fifty-three years of age at the time of her death.
