CARPENTER, JOHN (17??-1803)

CARPENTER, JOHN, businessman, JP, and registrar of deeds, 1797-1802; d. before 23 Mar 1803.

John Carpenter was a Loyalist trader at Shelburne, N.S., who moved to the Miramichi around 1787. He was granted a lot on the Northwest branch but soon abandoned it because of the inconvenience of the location. Between 1789 and 1802 he bought three lots at Douglastown.

Carpenter was appointed a justice of the peace in 1794 and participated in the Sessions. From 1795 to 1797 he was deputy registrar of deeds for the county, and he was registrar from 1797 to 1802. He died however, before 2 March 1803, when a notice regarding his estate was carried in The Royal Gazette. The administrators named in the notice were Tabitha Carpenter and James Henderson.
