WALSH, RICHARD D. (1871-1941)

WALSH, RICHARD D., building contractor and sawmill and woodworking plant owner; b. Chicago, 31 Oct 1871, s/o Richard Walsh and Ann Dwyer; brother of Catherine Walsh and Ellen E. Walsh; m. 1900, Margaret Elizabeth Cassidy, d/o Charles A. Cassidy and Mary Hanlon; d. Chatham, 15 Nov 1941.

Richard D. Walsh was born during two years which his parents spent in Chicago. He grew up in Chatham, and became a carpenter and building contractor. His structures included the former St Michael's Academy (1902), the Miramichi Natural History Association building (1908), and the Hotel Dieu Hospital (1913).

In 1910 he and his brother William Walsh bought John McDonald's woodworking factory. They also started a sawmill and, as W. & R. Walsh, conducted a successful lumber business in Chatham. In 1931, two years after William Walsh died, the sawmill, a warehouse, and the woodworking plant were lost to fire. Everything was rebuilt in 1932 on the former William D. Richards millsite, but the business did not continue to flourish. The mill had been idle for several years by 1939, when it was bought by J. Leonard O'Brien.

Walsh was a Chatham town councillor and a member of the Board of Trade. In 1913 he was a director of the Miramichi Exhibition Association. He was survived in 1941 by his wife, Margaret E. Cassidy, two sons, and four daughters.
