CORMIER, JOSEPH G. (1881-1923)

CORMIER, JOSEPH G., Catholic priest, Douglastown, 1914-21; b. 22 Nov 1881, s/o Joseph Cormier, a native of Petit Rocher, N.B., and Caroline O'Connors, a native of the Gaspé Peninsula; ordained 1911; d. Campbellton, N.B., 19 Mar 1923.

As a young man, Joseph G. Cormier worked in the lumber industry in northern New Brunswick. He later continued his education in Ottawa and Montreal and was trained for the priesthood in Rimouski, Que. He was curate at Newcastle from 1911 to 1914 and was then appointed rector of St Samuel's Church at Douglastown. He was transferred to Jacquet River as parish priest in 1921. He was only forty-one years old when his death occurred in 1923 at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Campbellton.
