COUGHLAN, PETER F. (1872-1935)

COUGHLAN, PETER F., police chief; b. Chatham, 1872, s/o Walter Coughlan and Margaret Ross; m. 1895, Mary Elizabeth Maher, d/o Michael Maher and Elizabeth Flynn, of Douglasfield; d. Chatham, 17 Feb 1935.

Peter F. Coughlan was a laborer in Chatham at the time of his marriage. He joined the Chatham police force around 1907 and was appointed chief in 1910. Whatever else a study of his twenty-five years as chief might reveal, it would show that he almost always kept his name out of the news. He was succeeded in 1935 by the only other member of the force, Joseph Dickson.

Coughlan was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. His widow, M. Elizabeth Maher, died in Brownville Junction, Me, in 1948, leaving a daughter and three sons.
