ANDERSON, WALTER DOUGLAS (1896-1969)

ANDERSON, WALTER DOUGLAS, businessman and military officer; b. Burnt Church, 14 Jun 1896, s/o William Anderson and Janet Sewell; brother of William Stafford Anderson; m. 1921, Hazel Ellen Frazer MacKay, of Hardwood Hill, Pictou Co., N.S.; d. Newcastle, 31 Jan 1969.

Walter D. Anderson was in the lumber manufacturing business throughout his adult life in partnership with his brother W. Stafford Anderson, whose political responsibilities required him to spend a good deal of time in Fredericton. Like his brother, he made his home in Newcastle from the 1920s onward. Prior to his retirement in the early 1960s he was president and general manager of the Anderson Manufacturing Co. and secretary-treasurer of the W. S. Anderson Co., firms which were for many years among the most successful on the Miramichi.

Anderson enlisted as a private soldier for overseas service in World War I. Twice wounded in action, he was commissioned in the field and awarded the Military Medal. Discharged as a lieutenant, he was later promoted through the ranks of the militia. In World War II he went overseas again, as second-in-command of the North Shore Regiment. Afterwards, he was in charge of infantry training centers. He retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Anderson sat on the Newcastle Town Council, and at the time of his death he was an honorary steward of St James and St John United Church. His survivors were his wife, Hazel E. F. MacKay, two sons, and a daughter.
