DOYLE, DENNIS PATRICK (1868-1929)

DOYLE, DENNIS PATRICK, hotel keeper, livery stable operator, and game warden; mayor of Newcastle, 1919-21; b. Bartibog, 7 Feb 1868, s/o John Doyle and Catherine McMahon; m. 1906, Mary Wheeler, d/o James Wheeler and Jane Drinan, of Newcastle; d. there, 12 May 1929.

Dennis P. Doyle left home at an early age and had jobs in Bathurst and Chatham. He later settled in Newcastle, where he was proprietor of the Commercial Hotel for a short time. In 1896 he gave the Commercial up and took over management of the livery stable at the Waverley Hotel (that is, the town's second Waverley), which had been opened by John McKeen in 1893. An avid horseman, he was soon conducting the most popular livery business in northern New Brunswick. He boarded horses, rented out horses, wagons, and sleighs, and could arrange to have a traveller transported anywhere at almost any time. He also operated a stage between Newcastle and Chatham and had mail and express service contracts. He was still in this business in 1907 but took up a new occupation in 1909, when he was appointed chief game warden for the three northeastern counties of New Brunswick.

Doyle was a Newcastle town councillor for several terms and served two years as mayor. He was also a member of the County Council for a lengthy period and sat on the Miramichi Hospital Board, the Newcastle Board of Health, and the executive committee of the Northumberland Agricultural Society. His wife, Mary Wheeler, played an active part in the League of the Sacred Heart. They left no descendants.
