DUNHAM, WALTER PONSFORD (1873-1942)

DUNHAM, WALTER PONSFORD, Anglican missionary, Ludlow, Blissfield, and Blackville, 1904-06; b. Saint John, 22 May 1873; s/o Edward Herbert Dunham and Sarah Lamoreaux; m. 1905, Lessie Waddell Cunningham, of Saint John; d. Moncton[18 Nov 1942.

Walter P. Dunham was educated in Saint John and trained in theology at the Montreal Diocesan College. He was lay reader at Derby and Blackville in 1903 and succeeded Mansel M. C. Shewen as priest in charge of the Southwest Miramichi mission in 1904. He was ordained in 1905 and left in 1906 to be missionary in the Florenceville area of Carleton County. He later had appointments as rector at McAdam, Fairville, Hampton, and Shediac.

Dunham was granted a BD in 1913 by authority of the ecclesiastical province of Canada. In 1940 he was made an honorary canon of Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton. He was survived in 1942 by his wife, Lessie W. Cunningham, and two sons.
