EMMERSON, ROBERT HENRY (1826-1857)

EMMERSON, ROBERT HENRY, native son; Baptist minister; b. North Esk parish, 11 Oct 1826, s/o John Emmerson and Maria Tozer; m. 1852, Augusta A. Read, d/o Joseph Read, of Minudie, N.S.; d. Moncton, 11 Sep 1857.

Robert Henry Emmerson, who credited his grandmother, Eunice (Ives) Tozer, with having directed his path in life, "manifested a very marked taste for reading and study" and had both "an acute perception" and "a tenacious memory." He was educated at the Baptist Seminary in Fredericton and Horton Academy at Wolfville, N.S., and was ordained to the Baptist ministry at Maugerville, N.B., in 1852. He was pastor at Maugerville until 1856, when called to Moncton. A little over a year later he died of typhoid fever, at age thirty.

During his much-abbreviated ministry Emmerson "read much, circulated a large amount of religious and intellectual reading, wrote for the public press, travelled extensively in the United States, kept up private and professional studies, and performed the arduous duties of the pastor." He was an "original thinker" and an "eloquent speaker," whose "magnetism of manner" endeared him to his colleagues and caused them to mourn his death profoundly.

Emmerson was survived by his wife, Augusta A. Read, one daughter, and two sons. One of his sons was Henry R. Emmerson, the New Brunswick premier and MP who was minister of railways and canals in the government of Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
