GAMACHE, EMÉLIE-EUGÉNIE (1856-1949)

GAMACHE, EMÉLIE-EUGÉNIE, Sister Ste-Séraphie of the Congregation of Notre Dame; teacher, and superior at Newcastle, 1906-08; b. Quebec City, 19 Nov 1856, d/o Louis-Symphorien Gamache and Emélie Vallière; entered religious life, 1873; d. Montreal, 22 Dec 1949.

Emélie-Eugénie Gamache was educated at the convent school at Montmagny, Que., and entered the novitiate of the Congregation of Notre Dame at age seventeen. A talented musician, she taught at various CND schools, mostly in Quebec. Music making and teaching were her first loves, but she accepted as a duty the terms which she was called upon to serve as superior of the religious communities at Newcastle and elsewhere. One of her last musical accomplishments was the composition of a hymn in 1945 in celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the pronouncement of her religious vows.
