JOHNSTONE, THOMAS GEORGE (1828-1904)

JOHNSTONE, THOMAS GEORGE, Presbyterian minister, Blackville, 1858-98; b. Douglastown, 9 Nov 1828, s/o David Johnstone and h/w Janet; brother of James B. Johnstone; m. 1855, Jessie McLeod, d/o Roderick McLeod and h/w Janet; d. Doaktown, 19 Jan 1904.

Thomas G. Johnstone received his early education at the Newcastle Grammar School and was trained for the ministry at the Free Church College in Halifax. He completed his studies in 1854 and was ordained in 1855. He was the minister at Richmond in Carleton County, N.B., and then answered a call to Blackville, where the pulpit had been empty since 1852. He gave the next forty years to the charge, preaching at Blackville, Derby, Chelmsford, and elsewhere. Ferguson Church, Derby, was in use throughout his pastorate, and Grace Church was dedicated at Millerton on 18 March 1894. After the railway was built in the 1880s he preached at Doaktown on a visiting basis, often staying overnight at the home of Harvie Doak. A new Presbyterian church was built at Doaktown in 1881, but no full-time minister was engaged for it until after his retirement in Newcastle in 1898. His wife, Jessie McLeod, died in Newcastle in November 1903, and he died at Doaktown six weeks later while visiting at the Doak home. He left no descendants, and most of his estate of around $6,600 was willed to the missions of the Presbyterian church.
