MCEACHERN, JOHN (1875-1945)

MCEACHERN, JOHN, steamer captain; b. 26 Jan 1875, s/o John McEachern and Mary Hogan, of Chatham; nephew of James Archibald McEachern; m. 1898, Elizabeth Ann (Foster) McEachern, d/o Oliver Foster and Elizabeth Margaret Savoy, of Escuminac and Loggieville, and wid/o his uncle Allan McEachern; d. Chatham, 8 Jul 1945.

The son of a ship pilot, John McEachern also spent much of his life on the water. In 1928 he was in command of the government patrol boat Neguac, which was in service along the northeastern coast of the province. During the last ten years of his life he was captain of the Frances Ullock, the steam ferry on the Chatham crossing.

McEachern and his wife, Elizabeth A. (Foster) McEachern, raised at least six children from her first marriage. They themselves had two daughters, who both became nurses, and a son, F. Roy McEachern, who became a Catholic priest.
