MCKNIGHT, JOSEPH (1851-1933)

MCKNIGHT, JOSEPH, general merchant; b. Napan, 22 Sep 1851, s/o James McKnight and Mary Dobie, both natives of Dumfriesshire, Scotland; m. 1880, Mary Graham Falconer, d/o Robert Falconer and Agnes Creighton, also natives of Scotland residing at Douglastown; d. there, 23 Feb 1933.

Around 1875 Joseph McKnight moved from Napan to Douglastown, where he conducted a general store for nearly fifty years. He was a county councillor and warden for a one-year term, a school trustee, a member of the board of trustees of St Mark's Presbyterian-United Church, and a member of the Miramichi Hospital Board. In 1913 he was a director of the Miramichi Black Fox Co., of Douglastown.

McKnight and his wife, Mary G. Falconer, had five daughters and two sons. Their son William F. McKnight, a graduate of McGill University, occupied the chair in electrical engineering at the Nova Scotia Technical College in the 1920s. Their son J. Graham McKnight, who won the Military Cross while serving as an officer of the 26th Battalion in World War I, was later on staff with the G. E. Barbour Co. in Saint John.
