MACLEOD, MARIANNE (1878-1958)

MACLEOD, MARIANNE, Sister St Henedine of the Congregation of Notre Dame; teacher, and superior at Newcastle, 1940-43; b. Dunvegan, Inverness Co., N.S., 12 Mar 1878, d/o John MacLeod and Catherine MacDonald; entered religious life, 1903; d. Montreal, 9 Sep 1958.

Marianne MacLeod attended the boarding schools at Pictou and Mabou, N.S., and after "a few years of teaching and of worldly amusements," made a decision to enter the novitiate of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Several months after she took her vows in 1905 she was sent to the convent at Sydney Mines, N.S., and she taught there twenty-one years. She was talented in drama and staged many plays and concerts which were enthusiastically received in the town. In 1926 she was transferred to the convent at Inverness, but she returned to Sydney Mines in 1934 as superior. This assignment was followed by her appointment to St Mary's Convent in Newcastle in 1940. When she departed three years later it was to go to Mabou, where "she ruled St Joseph's Convent with sympathetic understanding." She retired to the CND mother house in Montreal in 1948.
