PERCIVAL, CATHERINE (1795-1889)

PERCIVAL, CATHERINE, teacher and churchwoman; b. Little Salkeld, Addington parish, Cumberland, England, 25 Apr 1795, d/o George Percival and Alice Goulding; sister of John Percival; unmarried; d. Nelson, 2 Jul 1889.

Although born in Cumberland, England, Catherine Percival spent much of her early life in the towns of Kendal and Keswick in Westmoreland.

When John Percival became a widower in 1833 he had eight children at home between one and sixteen years of age. Having four unmarried sisters in England, he turned there for help, and his sister Catherine decided to come to New Brunswick to manage his household until the children were grown. She was thirty-eight years of age at the time, and as it occurred, she spent the rest of her life on the Miramichi. After her brother died she made her home with her niece Bridget Percival, the wife of George Burchill.

Besides performing her domestic duties, Percival taught school at Chatham Head for many years and was described in an early school report as "an excellent woman." She was also an important figure in the Anglican community. On 30 November 1890, more than a year after her death, St Mark's Church was consecrated at Nelson and named "in honour of the birthday of Miss Percival," who was born on St Mark's Day and who, "among her many other benefactions, contributed liberally to the building fund."
