PRICE, EVERETT (1893-1962)

PRICE, EVERETT, salmon fly-tier; b. Ludlow, 16 Jul 1893, s/o Thomas Nathaniel Price and h/w Mary; m. 1st, 1918, Agnes Christina O'Donnell, d/o Alexander O'Donnell and Elizabeth Stewart, and 2nd, Margaret (Colford) Hogan, of Weaver Siding, wid/o John Hogan; d. Newcastle, 24 Sep 1962.

Everett Price took jobs in the lumber woods, did road work, made axe handles for sale, and worked for a short time as a fisheries warden. He was also an accomplished salmon angler and river guide, but his main claim to remembrance is as one of the best of the Miramichi salmon fly-tiers.

Price tied versions of all the famous salmon flies and was successful, in the 1930s and 40s, in the development of his own distinctive line of hair wing flies which occupy a place in the history of fly fishing on the river. Flies tied by him include Black Squirrel, Brittany Special, Buttermilk Brown, Rose of New England Streamer, and Price's Dose.

Price taught fly-tying techniques to other Miramichi salmon fishermen, as well as to fly fishermen from the United States. A master fly-tier with whom he was associated was Ira Gruber, of Pennsylvania, who spent much of the later part of his life on the Miramichi.

Price made his home at Blackville for many years, where he had a small fly-tying business. At his death in 1962 he was survived by his second wife and seven children from his first marriage.
