PRICE, PERLEY CLEVELAND (1888-1961)

PRICE, PERLEY CLEVELAND, MLA; b. Parker's Ridge, 25 December 1888, s/o Saunders Price and Isobel Marie Spencer; m. 1917, Mildred Elizabeth Russell, d/o Frank Russell and Margaret Ellen Miller, of Doaktown; d. Newcastle, 7 Feb 1961.

P. Cleveland Price, who was a great-grandson of Richard Price and a grandnephew of James L. Price, moved to Doaktown in 1905 at age seventeen, when his father, a successful lumberman, bought the Murray House hotel and took over its operation.

Price was employed in the lumber industry and later by the provincial Department of Public Works. He was a member of the County Council for thirty-five years and warden in 1954. He was a candidate for a seat in the Legislative Assembly in the election of 1925 but was unsuccessful and did not offer again for thirty-one years. In 1956 he won election as a Liberal, and he sat until 1960.

Price died at the courthouse in Newcastle soon after addressing a meeting of the County Council. He was survived by his wife, Mildred E. Russell, and a son.
