ROWLANDS, ERNEST (1884-1969)

ROWLANDS, ERNEST, Methodist minister, Derby circuit, 1916-20; b. West Hartlepool, Durham, England, c1884; m. 1912, in Toronto, Edith Readman, of West Hartlepool; d. Scarborough, Ont., 19 Jan 1969.

The record of Ernest Rowland's marriage shows his parents' names as Robert Rowlands and Ellen Gibbs, but this information has not been confirmed.

Rowlands was received into the Methodist ministry on trial in 1908 and was ordained in 1912 following a period of study at Mount Allison University. Before coming to the Miramichi in 1916 he had an assignment at Grand Lake, N.B.

While he was the minister at Millerton, Rowlands created the Derby Literary Club, which met under his auspices at the Methodist manse. For the Burns anniversary in February 1920 he read a paper on the poet's life and works. Later that month the Presbyterian minister at Millerton, the Rev. William McN. Matthews, addressed the club on "Canadian Literature," and a committee was formed to plan the staging of a drama at Easter.

Rowlands presided at the opening of a new church at Trout Brook on 27 June 1920, but he had already announced that he would be moving to Welsford, N.B. At the time of church union in 1925, he was stationed at Baie Verte. He was subsequently with the United Church in Nova Scotia, until 1938, and then ministered for ten years in Bermuda, which was within the Halifax Presbytery. He retired in 1948. Later, he undertook supply work in Newfoundland and hospital chaplain duties in Ontario. He was survived in 1969 by his wife, Edith Readman, two sons, and two daughters.
