BISHOP, WILLIAM PALLEN (1846-1906)

BISHOP, WILLIAM PALLEN, doctor and drug store owner; b. Bathurst, N.B., 7 Jan 1848, s/o Samuel L. Bishop, MD, and Catherine Pallen; m. 1872, Christina Park, d/o William Park and Margaret MacLaggan; d. Bathurst, 26 Oct 1906.

William P. Bishop was the son of the leading physician in Bathurst at the time of his birth, and a nephew of Dr John Pallen of Chatham. After he received his MD from Harvard Medical College in 1868 he opened a practice in Newcastle, as well as the town's most up-to-date drug store. He was the first surgeon of the 73rd Battalion of militia when it was formed in 1870. In the same year, he addressed the Mechanics' Institute on "Hygiene." He married a Newcastle woman in 1872 and was appointed a coroner before 1875. However, he sold his drug store business in 1876 to E. Lee Street, and when his father died in Bathurst in 1879, he relocated there. When he himself died in 1906, at age fifty-eight, his survivors were his wife, Christina Park, two sons, and a daughter.
