BURGESS, FRANK SCOTT (1881-1959)

BURGESS, FRANK SCOTT, fish hatchery manager; b. Windsor, N.S., 1881, s/o Joseph B. Burgess and M. Ellen S. Scott; m. Helen Geddes Stalker Browne, RN, of Halifax; d. Newcastle, 2 Feb 1959.

When Isaac Sheasgreen died in 1914 his responsibilities as manager of the fish hatchery at South Esk were assumed by his son and former assistant, William Sheasgreen. In 1917 William resigned and moved his family to Montreal. He was succeeded by his brother James Sheasgreen, who died after only one year on the job. At that time, Frank S. Burgess was appointed superintendent of the station.

The son of a merchant in Windsor, N.S., Burgess had been employed at the fish hatchery in his hometown from 1906 and had also kept abreast of the work being done at South Esk. The South Esk station was rebuilt in 1907, and when he took over management of it in 1918 it was the largest of three fish culture stations being conducted by the federal government in the Maritimes. He retained the superintendency for thirty years, until his retirement on pension in Newcastle in 1948.

Burgess, who was affiliated with St Andrew's Anglican Church, was survived in 1959 by his wife, Helen G. S. Browne, and two daughters. His widow died in Newcastle in 1971.
