BARRY, FRANCIS HERBERT CRANNEY (1896-1962)

BARRY, FRANCIS HERBERT CRANNEY, lawyer, police magistrate, and judge of probate; b. Chatham, 21 Feb 1896, s/o Edward Barry and Elizabeth O'Kane; brother of Edward A. Barry and John Patrick Barry; m. 1931, Mary Charlotte McWilliam, d/o George F. McWilliam and Rose Ellen Millea; d. Chatham, 12 Mar 1962.

F. Herbert Barry received his secondary education at the Chatham Grammar School and St Thomas College and served overseas in World War I. He later attended Suffolk Law School in Boston, studied with George M. McDade, and was admitted to the bar in 1930. He practiced in Chatham. In 1943 he was appointed police magistrate for the town, but this position was terminated when a system of county magistrates was introduced in 1945. He also served as registrar of probate for the county and was appointed judge of probate and clerk of the County Court about a year and a half before his death.

Barry played an active part in college sports and was later president of the St Thomas College Alumni Association. He was a Liberal in politics and a member of the Catholic church. He was survived in 1962 by his wife, M. Charlotte McWilliam, a daughter, and a son.
