FONG, YICK B. (1874-1953)

FONG, YICK B., Chinese restaurant owner; b. Canton, China, 21 Aug 1874; m. Lee S. Lee, also a native of China; d. Newcastle, 12 Aug 1953.

Yick ("Charles") Fong came to Canada at the turn of the century and to Newcastle around 1918. From that date onward he was the proprietor of the King Café. For several years he also operated a laundry. An adherent of the United Church, he was survived in 1953 by his wife and ten children.

Fong was not the first Chinese restauranteur on the Miramichi. One of his predecessors was Wong Ying, who operated the Centre Café in Newcastle. Racial hostility was prevalent in 1916, and he was assaulted when he tried to prevent a nonpaying customer from leaving. A year later, following another run-in with an unruly customer, his restaurant was wrecked and he severely beaten. Three men, including a returned soldier, were charged in the incident, which the Union Advocate described as "a most disgraceful affair." A later restaurant operator was Walter Wong, a Royal Air Force veteran of World War I. He opened Wong's Café in Newcastle in 1929 and conducted it until his death ten years later.
