City of Saint John, St. John County, Mariner. Intestate. On 6 December 1824 the next of kin of the deceased were cited to appear and show cause why administration of the estate should not be granted to John RATTER. Petition of John RATTER, dated 5 December 1824, stated that William BURT, "a natural Englishman," sailed from Saint John bound to the West Indies in the brig "Mungo Park," David PRINDLE Master, as a seaman, sometime in the month of March; that on the return voyage William BURT by some accident fell overboard and drowned; that William BURT had made Saint John his home for the past three or four years; that William BURT had wages due him from William and Thomas LEAVITT and had left a note of hand for £45 from them with petitioner; and that William BURT has no wife or relation of any description in this country. William ALSTON attested that William BURT had told the petitioner, John RATTER, he should keep the money due from William and Thomas LEAVITT should anything happen to him as "any relations were well enough off." Administration granted 15 December 1824 to John RATTER, grocer. Fellow bondsmen William DUNHAM, cooper, and Peter PADDIE, grocer, all of the City of Saint John.
