The death occurred yesterday of John SEARS, age 75. Mr. Sears was until within a few months ago in comparatively robust health. Mr. Sears was a son of Thatcher SEARS, a Loyalist in whose family was the first child born in St. John after the landing of the Loyalists. The deceased followed the trade of a printer with the late Henry CHUBB, publisher of the 'Courier'. At a newsboys dinner in Trinity church school house a few years ago, he pleasantly said that he was the oldest newsboy in the city. He did not remain at the printing business very long after he served his apprenticeship. For a time he carried on a tea business here and he took a deep interest in the drug business carried on by his son, Wm M. SEARS, now dead. For a number of years he was a chairman of the board of water commissioner and was also an assessor. He had been a church warden of Trinity Church for a long period and was probably the oldest member of that congregation. When the S.P.C.A. was formed Mr. Sears was elected its president and he has acceptably filled that position ever since. Mr. Sears married Ann BLACKWOOD d/o Rev. William BLACKWOOD, Edinburgh, Scotland. One of his sons is in the British Army, one in Kingston and one in New York. His daughter is married to Rev. John WALTERS and is now in England. GLOBE: Mr. Sears married Ann BLANCHARD d/o Rev. William BLANCHARD of Nova Scotia.
