Mr. Jost was born in Halifax in 1804 and consequently was in his 85th year. In 1826 he removed to Lunenburg where he has since resided, being in the mercantile trade here for more than 40 years. Before leaving Halifax, Jost joined the militia as a private and after coming here worked himself, step by step, into the office of Lt. Col. In 1848 he was made a magistrate and in 1851 was first elected to represent Lunenburg. He contested the county in 1855 and 1859 and was defeated both times, but was successful in 1863, defeating the Hon. Joseph HOWE. The deceased was a warm supporter of Confedera-tion. He was a freemason of 60 years standing and represented the grand lodge of Minnesota in the grand lodge of Nova Scotia. Of late years he filled the office of overseer of fisheries.
