Hampstead (Queens Co.) June 30 - A sad accident happened at the granite quarry, Spoon Island, operated by Harry WALTON. While the men were engaged in hoisting a large stone to load on board the boat for St. John, the derrick fell, striking Robert ROSS on the head and cutting a fearful gash on the skull, also breaking one of his legs and injuring him severely about the back and shoulders. Fears are entertained that the unfortunate man received internal injuries which may prove fatal. James WALTON at the same time had a narrow escape, the mast of the derrick falling on one side of him and the boom on the other, leaving a space of not more than four feet where he stood.
