A terrible shooting affray took place yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of the government pier. From the accounts given by the boys, it appears that a lad named Bennett who lives on Britain street (St. John) yesterday afternoon met with two other boys named Stack and Miller somewhere on Charlotte street. Bennet then showed the others a revolver which he had concealed in his trouser pockets. After talking together for a few minutes the three lads then went to Jeremiah HENNESSY's shop where Bennett displayed the revolver. Mr. Bennet cautioned the lad. Ascertaining that the revolver was loaded, Mr. Hennessy advised Bennet to go into some field nearby and discharge his weapon. One of the lads proposed that they should go down to the railway wharf. Charles TRAYNOR and another man came along close to the wharf about 4 o'clock where they found a boy named Willie HAWKES lying bleeding. Mr. Traynor, who is an uncle of the lad Hawkes and friend then carried the boy to his grandfather's, Patrick TRAYNOR's house on Britain street. During all this time Hawkes was unconscious and bled freely from his nose and right eye. Drs B.E. Berryman and Travers were then summoned. After examining the wound, the medical men were forced to the conclusion that the lad could not recover. He is a son of John HAWKES, at present residing in Boston, but formerly of this city and a member of firm Hawkes Bros. who did business on King Square. The Bennett boy is a son of Lewis BENNETT who lives with his mother on Brittain street. His father was killed accidentally some years ago. Stack is a son of George STACK, Germain street and Miller is a son of James MILLER, also of Germain street. (see original)
